Temperature effects on first-year growth of cultured oyster toadfish, Opsanus tau.

چکیده
occurred at 1.5 to 2.0 cm (Fig. 1). Strike success was similar when compared to prey number remaining, indicating that earlier predation events did not influence predation success. Juvenile toadfish are effective short-range ambush predators. At strike distances between 0 and 1.5 cm they strike successfully 76.2% of the time. But between 1.5 and 2.0 cm, strike success is mixed, and it continues to decline with distance. Future experiments will examine the efficacy of prestrike orientation on predation success. We thank L. Effects of temperature and diet on the growth rate of year 0 oyster toadfish, Opsanus tau.
The effects of temperature and diet on the growth of captive year 0 specimens of Opansus tau were examined for two consecutive year classes. The 2001 year class was raised at about 23, 26, or 29 degrees C and provided with live brine shrimp, frozen butterfish and squid, or commercial food pellets (45% protein, 19% fat, and 3% fiber) three times per week. Maximal growth was achieved with the pel...
متن کاملVitamin B12 radioassay with oyster toadfish (Opsanus tau) serum as binder.
We describe a vitamin B12 radioassay in which oyster toadfish (Opsanus tau) serum is used as the binding protein. The serum is quite stable and has a high capacity and high binding affinity (K greater than 10(12) liter/mol) for vitamin B12. The binding is not significantly affected by temperature, the presence of denatured proteins, or the amount of vitamin B12 present. The radioassay is reprod...
متن کاملEffect of the anesthetic tricaine (MS-222) on nerve activity in the anterior lateral line of the oyster toadfish, Opsanus tau.
Inductive neural telemetry was used to record from microwire electrodes chronically implanted into the anterior lateral line nerve of the toadfish, Opsanus tau. Spontaneous neural activity and the response of lateral line fibers to water current were continually monitored from 17 primary afferent fibers before, during, and after the administration of the anesthetic tricaine (MS-222). Significan...
متن کاملMariculture of the toadfish Opsanus tau.
In response to declining stocks of toadfish in local waters around Cape Cod, Massachusetts, a toadfish mariculture program was initiated in the summer of 1998 (1); the aims were to provide researchers at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) with sufficient numbers (approximately 400 per year) of this valuable biomedical research model (2, 3) while lessening pressure on native stocks. The goal...
متن کاملSensitivity of the anterior lateral line to natural stimuli in the oyster toadfish, Opsanus tau (Linnaeus).
Inductive neural telemetry was used to record from microwire electrodes chronically implanted into the anterior lateral line nerve of the oyster toadfish, Opsanus tau (L.). The lateral lines of free-ranging toadfish were stimulated by the swimming movements of a prey fish (Fundulus heteroclitus), and the corresponding neural activity was quantified. Both spontaneously active and silent afferent...
